If there is one thing homeschool life guarantees, it is curiosity. I cannot count the number of times I have heard “why” before eight in the morning. Why is the sky blue? Why does water boil? Why does my slime sometimes get hard? Those questions used to feel endless until I realized they were actually the beginning of something beautiful—our weekly STEM Day.
STEM Day became one of our favorite traditions in our homeschool. It gives my kids space to explore, build, test, and discover while I get to watch their little minds light up with excitement. What I love most is that it reminds me learning is everywhere, even in the messiest moments.

Why STEM Matters in Homeschool
STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math, but to me, it stands for curiosity, creativity, and connection. These hands-on lessons teach kids to think critically, ask questions, and find answers through exploration.
As a homeschool family, we have the freedom to let curiosity lead. We can pause a math lesson to explore how bridges stay strong or use kitchen ingredients to create chemical reactions that make us laugh and learn.
And for us, STEM is not just about science: it is also about faith. Every experiment becomes a way to marvel at the world God designed. When we study how plants grow or how air makes things move, we are exploring His creation in action.
Simple STEM Projects You Can Do at Home
STEM projects do not have to be complicated or expensive. Some of the best lessons come from everyday items already sitting in your kitchen or playroom. Here are some of our favorite homeschool STEM projects that always spark excitement.
Balloon Rocket: Use string, tape, and a balloon to demonstrate motion and force. Thread the string through a straw, tie it between two chairs, tape the balloon to the straw, and watch it zoom across the room.
Homemade Lava Lamp: Fill a clear jar with oil, water, food coloring, and pieces of Alka-Seltzer. The bubbles rise and fall as the reaction takes place. It is a fun way to learn about density and chemical reactions.
Paper Bridge Challenge: Give your kids a sheet of paper, tape, and coins. Ask how many coins their bridge can hold before it collapses. Encourage them to test different shapes and folds. They will learn about structure, stability, and problem-solving.
Bean Sprout Growth: Place a dry bean in a clear plastic cup with damp paper towels. Over the next week, watch it sprout roots and stems. This simple project teaches patience and the miracle of growth.
Slime or Oobleck: Mix cornstarch and water to create a strange substance that is both a solid and a liquid. Let kids experiment with texture and talk about how matter changes under pressure.
Each project is a mix of laughter, learning, and hands-on fun that makes STEM a highlight of our homeschool week.
Tips for a Successful STEM Day
Keep all your STEM supplies together in one bin so you can grab them easily.
Let your kids lead the projects and ask guiding questions instead of giving answers.
Schedule STEM Day once a week to create consistency and excitement.
Use it as a chance to step back and let curiosity drive the lesson.
At the end of each session, we like to pause and ask, “What did we learn today about God’s creation?” That small reflection makes even the simplest project feel meaningful.
